Conformational properties of poor solvent polyelectrolytes

چکیده
We present recent simulations on charged polymers in poor solvent in the dilute concentration range, with and without imposed extension constraints. The resulting pearl-necklace polymer conformations are analyzed in detail. We find strong pearl number and size fluctuations leading only to minimal signatures in the form factor and the force-extension relation. We see no sign of instability of the pearl-necklaces due to counterion condensation. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 61.25.Hq; 36.20.Ey; 87.15.Aa

Theory of polyelectrolytes in solutions and at surfaces
Polyelectrolytes are polymers carrying either positively or negatively charged ionizable groups. The properties of these polymers in solutions and at charged surfaces depend on the fraction of dissociated ionic groups, solvent quality for polymer backbone, solution dielectric constant, salt concentration, and polymer–substrate interactions. In this review, we summarize the current development o...
متن کاملComputer modeling of charged polymers
We give a short introduction into polyelectrolytes and show some of the problems of modeling charged polymer systems. We concentrate on two model systems. The first one consists of flexible polyelectrolytes exposed to a poor solvent. These polymers show interesting conformational behavior. We will discuss them and hint to the difficulties of observing conformational transitions in light scatter...
متن کاملConformational transitions of a weak polyampholyte.
Using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of a flexible polyelectrolyte where the charges are in contact with a reservoir of constant chemical potential given by the solution pH, we study the behavior of weak polyelectrolytes in poor and good solvent conditions for polymer backbone. We address the titration behavior and conformational properties of a flexible diblock polyampholyte chain for...
متن کاملIonic Strength and Solvent Control over the Physical Structure, Electronic Properties and Superquenching of Conjugated Polyelectrolytes
In this paper, we investigate the photophysical properties of the conjugated polyelectrolyte poly(2-methoxy-5-propyloxy sulfonate phenylene vinylene), MPS-PPV, dissolved in both water and DMSO as a function of the solution ionic strength. Dynamic light scattering indicates that MPS-PPV chains exist in a highly agglomerated conformation in both solvents, and that the size of the agglomerates dep...
متن کاملPolyelectrolytes in Solution- Recent Computer Simulations
We present a short overview over recent MD simulations of systems of fully flexible polyelectrolyte chains with explicitly treated counter ions using the full Coulomb potential. The main emphasis is given on the conformational properties of the polymers, with a short discussion on counter ion condensation.
